Adventure Motorcycle Camping Gear India: The Complete Checklist

by Dipesh Shah

Moto camping in India is unlike camping anywhere else. You are dealing with extreme temperature variation, unpredictable weather, trails that switch from paved road to loose gravel to river crossings within the same day, and distances that demand every gram of gear earns its place. This checklist is built from 20 years of personal moto-camping experience across most states of India - from Ladakh to the Western Ghats to the forests of the North East.

The principle: weight versus utility

Every item on a moto-camping setup competes with every other item for space and load capacity. The question to ask about each item is not "is this useful" but "is this useful enough to justify its weight and packed volume." Apply this test ruthlessly. You will always pack more than you need on your first trip. By your third trip you will have found the correct balance for your riding style and terrain.

Shelter

  • Tent: 1-2 person freestanding, double-wall, under 2kg. Freestanding matters for rocky ground where stakes do not penetrate.
  • Footprint / groundsheet: extends tent floor life significantly on rough ground
  • Sleeping bag: rated to 5 degrees below your coldest expected overnight temperature
  • Sleeping mat: closed-cell foam for durability, or inflatable for compressibility
  • Headlamp: 200 lumen minimum, spare batteries or USB rechargeable

Cooking and water

  • Compact stove: canister or alcohol. Canister stoves are faster, alcohol stoves are lighter and use locally sourced fuel.
  • Fuel: 230ml canister covers roughly 3-4 days of cooking for one person
  • Cookware set: nesting pots that pack inside each other, with folding handles
  • Spork and knife: one utensil combination reduces items
  • Water filter or purification tablets: do not rely on bottled water when camping in remote locations
  • Water bottles: 2 litres minimum carrying capacity
  • Camp coffee kit: French press, pour-over, or moka pot depending on preference

Clothing

  • Base layer: merino wool or synthetic moisture-wicking. One riding, one camp.
  • Mid layer: lightweight down or synthetic insulation jacket. Compresses small, adds significant warmth.
  • Riding jacket with liner: covers both riding and camp weather in most conditions
  • Rain gear: even in dry seasons, monsoon pockets appear without warning in the Ghats and the North East
  • Camp shoes: lightweight sandals or trail shoes. Your motorcycle boots should not be your only footwear for three days.
  • Gloves: one riding pair, one light liner for cold evenings at altitude

Tools and spares

  • Tyre repair kit: plugs, CO2 cartridges or hand pump, tyre levers
  • Chain lube: one small bottle is sufficient for a 3-5 day trip
  • Allen key set: covering all bolt sizes on your motorcycle
  • Spoke wrench: critical for spoke-wheeled motorcycles on rough terrain
  • Electrical tape and spare fuses
  • Zip ties: 20 of varying sizes. Universal repair solution.
  • 12V tyre inflator: battery-powered, clips to the battery
  • Duct tape: wrapped around a water bottle to save space

Navigation and electronics

  • Phone or GPS unit in a handlebar mount: do not hold your phone in your hand on rough terrain
  • Power bank: 10,000mAh minimum for 3+ day trips without access to power
  • 12V USB charger: trickle charge while riding
  • Offline maps downloaded: Google Maps and Maps.me both work offline
  • Emergency contact information: written on paper, not just in your phone

Motorcycle-specific gear

  • Luggage tail rack: provides a platform for dry bags and top boxes
  • Saddle stays or pannier frame: for side luggage
  • Dry bags: 10-litre for tail, 20-litre for panniers. Waterproof is not optional in India.
  • Tank bag: for items needed without stopping - snacks, documents, phone
  • Engine bash plate: mandatory for any off-road or river crossing
  • Side stand extender: for soft ground and forest campsites
  • Tyre pressure gauge: check cold pressure each morning on long trips

Documents and safety

  • RC, insurance and driving licence: originals or DigiLocker, plus photocopies in a separate location
  • First aid kit: blister plasters, antiseptic, painkillers, altitude sickness medication if riding above 3,500m
  • Emergency cash: ATMs are not available on most remote routes in India
  • Inner line permits: required for certain areas of Arunachal Pradesh, parts of Ladakh and border districts

What to leave at home

The most common overpacking mistakes on a first moto-camping trip: more than two pairs of jeans, a full-size towel (get a microfibre travel towel), more than two books, a full laptop, and anything with a cord that cannot be USB charged. The test is simple: lay everything out, look at it, and remove one-third. You will almost never wish you had brought something you left behind. You will frequently wish you had left behind something you brought.
