Hampta Pass Trek with Kamakshi Pal
5-day high-altitude crossing from Kullu Valley to Lahaul and Spiti at 4,200m. Led by Kamakshi Pal, NIM-trained mountaineer.
Hampta Pass.
Hampta Pass is where the Kullu Valley's green alpine meadows crash into the stark, lunar silence of Lahaul and Spiti. At 4,200 metres, you cross a threshold and the world completely changes around you. Five days. Two valleys. One crossing that stays with you.
Arrive in Manali and check into the hotel. A short exploratory hike into the jungle area helps the body begin adjusting to altitude. Evening brief on the route ahead, gear check, and a proper dinner before the trek begins the next morning.
The trail enters a lush forest of maple, deodar, and oak from Jobra. After a wooden bridge crossing and 1.5km beneath the trees, the valley opens up. The path ascends through boulders and shrubs alongside the river, with wild horses grazing freely through the meadow. Camp at Chikha.
An early 8 AM start. The first 2km are a moderate ascent through mud and slush depending on rain. The first river crossing at 2.5km opens into the flower-packed meadows of Jwara, where lunch becomes a genuine picnic. The trail flattens as it follows the river toward Balu Ka Ghera, the last major camp before the pass.
The hardest and most rewarding day. Off at 6:30 AM along the Rani nallah. Zigzag boulder sections give way to steep ascent from the 2km mark. Greenery ends at 3km and a dry trail of snow and rock takes over. Weather becomes unpredictable. Hampta Pass sits at the top of this gauntlet. Cross it and you are in Lahaul. The descent runs 3km to flat ground and straight to Shea Goru camp.
The second glacial river crossing happens early at 7 AM near camp, one of the most memorable moments of the trek. The descent follows the powerful Chandra river on the left. Reach Chhatru by midday, then a cab back to Manali arriving around 4 PM. Trek ends here.
